The prospect for farming in West Africa is at a high rate. Having said that, let’s take a closer look at some of the types of Farming that does very well.
Rice Farming
Nigeria has one of the world’s highest Rice consumption stat. Rice is by far one of the most popular staple food among Nigerians, Ghanaians, Chadians, Cameroonians and other countries of West Africa. Almost every family eats rice daily. In 2011 alone, West Africa spent $991billion on rice importation. That means that there is progression.
Any entrepreneur who goes into rice farming and get it right is sure to be smiling to the bank. A bag of rice is currently sold for N13,000 to N16,000 depending on the quality. A farmer who is able to invest in large scale rice production in Nigeria and able to produce 100,000 Bags of processed Rice in a year, sell at wholesale price of about N10,000 per bag, he will be making 10,000 x 100,000 = 100,000,000
Cassava planting- The popularity of cassava as the major source of food for west Africa goes back to ages. Between garri and rice , it is hard to tell which one is the most popular food in Nigeria and within West Africa. Apart from garri , there are countless of other food stuffs that are processed from cassava in Nigeria. The introduction of the high level yield species of cassava has made it possible for the Nigerian cassava farmers to produce more cassava per plot. Nearly every land in Nigeria is good for growing cassava and 1 Acre , when properly planted and managed can produced thousands of tubers of cassava in a year.
Poultry Farming- Every one knows how profitable poultry farming is. It doesn’t need much introduction yet , it is still not fully tapped. What is currently have is few badly managed , scantily equipped poultry farmers here and there. The eggs incubation is another goldmine. These are all due to lapses in enhancement of human rights which is affecting development and drastically affecting economic development.
Beans planting- Beans is a nutritious food. A bag of beans sells more than a bag of garri. In the northern part of Nigeria , that is where there are large plantations of beans farming , supplying almost all over Nigeria and West Africa.
Cat fish Rearing- Cat fish business is really selling in West Africa countries right now but now many are really getting it right? A single catfish sells for 700 Naira in Restaurants and 400 Naira in open markets.
Goat Rearing- In the Northern parts of west Arica goats is reared in commercial quantities in subsistence and commercial quantities. In the U. S.A , Australia and Great Britain , farmers are among the wealthiest people – A full grown goat sells for 15,000 Naira to 40,000 Naira within West Africa.
Maize planting- One agricultural advantage about maize is that of it’s rapidity in planting and harvesting. It takes less than 4 months between planting and harvesting. When there is turbulence in the planting of maize , it can to price havoc in the production of Brew products , like Beer and other maize ingredient beverage products, because maize will then be imported and these attracts high charges.
